Weekend in NYC and DC

Friday night my boyfriend and I had dinner up in NYC at Ed's Lobster Bar, where I ordered the Linguine with Clams and he had their famous Lobster Roll. Both were extremely delicious!!

After dinner we strolled through Times Square, did some shopping and then headed to Chinatown for some late night munchies. I tried duck tongue for the first time that night, not sure if I'm gonna go back for more.

The next morning we headed back to Chinatown, saw the Chinese dragon dance, and did some bargaining on Canal Street. Afterwards, we grabbed brunch with two of my college friends at Max Brenner and ran into Scott Adsit from 30 Rock!!

I thought my boyfriend was crazy for stalking this random guy while we were waiting to be seated, but to my surprise he spotted out a celebrity. If you're going to Max Brenner you have to get the chocolate! I had a nice warm chocolate drink, Maragnan, its milk chocolate cream with Irish cream, and espresso and for lunch I had the Grilled Asparagus Crepe.

That pretty much wrapped up our quick trip in NYC and started our roadtrip from NYC to Washington, D.C. to meet up with some more of my friends. That night we headed into Adams Morgan for a crazy night of drinking, dancing, and laughs. It was a short trip for me but I had so much fun meeting up with all my friends. I love our spontaneity! Thanks for a great weekend everyone :)

Welcome to Miami....and hello bug bites :(

I'm currently living it up in Miami Beach, Fl for my rotation and loving it, but I've got some awful mosquito bites on my legs. So here's a few at home remedies you may want to try if you're in the same situation as me.

1. A small dab of toothpaste

2. Put deodarant over the bite

3. Aloe lotion (that seems to stop the itch for only a little bit)

4. Salt-wet the area of the bug bite and put a little salt over it

5. Lemon

In my opinion, the toothpaste works the best. It stays on the longest and has the best effect.

But more importantly, try to avoid even getting bit by these bugs and reduce the use of scented lotions and perfumes.

Nail Polish Galore

I have a love for DARK nail polishes, I like for my nail polish to stand out and make a statement. My most recent newbie is OPI's Espresso Your Style that a received on my birthday, thanks J! I love this color, it's a rich brown with a light hint of sparkles which adds a nice shimmer. I just painted my toes with it and they look great with my Steve Madden sandals.

Recently, I also bought some cheap-o nail polish (LA Colors) from Five Below, 3 for $5, I just couldn't pass up the deal :) I have to say that the polish isn't as bad as I thought it would be. The polish hasn't chipped and it goes on pretty smoothly. Five Below also has nail art paints which are pretty expensive at the beauty stores but only $2 here. I just used it on my neice's to make little flowers and hearts on their toes and they loved it! The nail art paints are a bit stringy when you use them so you need to be careful not to mess up your design when using them.

I have a preference for OPI and China Glaze nail polishes but I think Sally Hansen makes a pretty good cheap alternative. You can also find OPI nail polishes at better prices online, check out Nail Polish Diva.

Selling Your Clothes...

My friend and I went to Closet Exchange in Abington hoping to sell our clothes and make a few dollars, but we were setting ourselves up for disappointment :( Knowing that Closet Exchange was asking for certain names and designers, I picked out my gently worn clothing from H&M, Forever 21, Seven Jeans (for All Mankind), some being my favorites that I thought I should just get rid of to make space in my closet. I knew they wouldn't take all of my clothes, but I figured they would give something good for my designer jeans, but boy was I wrong. They decided to take a few tank tops from Forever 21 and Express and only gave me $11! Each shirt got me about $1.10. If you were considering selling your clothes to make some money, I think you're better off donating your clothes and getting it written off your taxes at the end of the year. I don't know what style of clothing they're looking for, but I definitely didn't have the things they liked.

I did do a little bit of browsing while I was there, and found that Closet Exchange does have a decent size collection of Lacoste items at pretty competitive prices, I think I saw a golf shirt for $11, pretty good! I didn't end up buying anything though, I think I'm gonna try and hit up some other places like Plato's Closet or Worth Repeating. Keep me updated if there's a sweet thrift store that I'm not aware of, thanks!

FHI Hair Dryer

So about 3 weeks ago my Vidal Sassoon (a VS525 Professional Hair Dryer) hair dryer died :( It was at the most critical time too, my goddaughter's christening. Fortunately, I had an older Hot Tools hair dryer, however...it took me like half an hour to dry my hair. Hot Tools is definitely a no-go with me, I've been through 3 of them! Each of my Hot Tools hair dryers started sparking up and smelled like I was burning my hair right before they broke. I've been through too many hair dryers so I figured it was time to splurge a little, so last week, with the assistance of an Ulta consultant, I purchased an FHI Nano Weight Pro 1800 hair dryer.It's only been 1 week since I've been using the hair dryer, but I can definitely say that there's a world of difference between a more expensive, professional hair dryer vs. the more affordable, every day hair dryer. I've never been a believer of all the big name hair tools, but now I've converted, haha! The FHI dryer dries my hair in less than 8 mintues, awesome! (That means I can sleep in a little more in the mornings.) The best part about this dryer is after I'm done drying my hair, I don't need to run a straightener through my hair afterwards, but I still run a straightener through my bangs. This hair dryer still isn't perfect though-there's only a Hot and a Cool setting, no Warm setting. The Hot can get really HOT, so I find myself constantly switching between the two settings. I was able to get the hair dryer for a great price with a 20% off coupon at Ulta, it was only $85 with tax included.

I'm still saving my pretty pennies for a better hair dryer, like the Super Solano!! Please let me know if there's another blow dryer that you think I might be more satisfied with. Also, I'll have to update you on the newest hair product I'm using, samy's FAT Hair (thanks Julie!) I've only been using it 3 days now, I'm gonna give another week before I tell you more about it.

Zento Sushi!

Last night for an early birthday dinner, my friends, Julie and Tim took me out to get sushi at Zento, a contemporary japanese restaurant. The food was delicious, the fish tasted fresh and the hostess is really cute. The restaurant's located on Chestnut St. between 2nd and Front down in Olde City. The place is only has about 10 tables so make sure you have a reservation. We started dinner with my favorite, fried calamari. The calamari was cooked perfectly, the rings were tender and not too chewy and it came with a great Thai spicy sauce.

For dinner we ordered, the Zento Square roll, the Flaming Dragon roll, and the mixed Sashimi plate. The Zento Square roll has eel, avocado, and your choice of tuna or salmon on top. We chose the salmon! It's topped off with a great sauce. The Flaming Dragon roll has tuna, avocado, and eel topped with roe. Both of these choices were great!

The mixed sashimi plate came with 10 pieces of fresh fish. My favorite on this plate was the Wasabi encrusted pan-seared Tuna, yummy!!

Is Sarah Palin starting a new eyewear trend?

What's all the hype about our republican running mate Palin's specs? Sarah Palin's not only running for vice president, but she's also starting a huge eyewear trend! She recently updated her look with a new pair of rimless Kawasaki Kazuo glasses by Italee. She sure does like those rimless frames, here's a comparision of her old glasses...

to her new ones...
I definitely like the new specs better, the previous pair are just a little outdated. If I had seen her new frames alone, I would've thought "too masculine and the lenses are too big." However, Sarah Palin surprisingly pulls the look off well; she looks trendy yet very professional.

Schweinfurt, Germany!!

And the countdown begins...only 4 months until I leave for Germany! I was really excited when I came by another student's blog about Schweinfurt's Clinic on the army base. This is the exact place I'll be working in January. I'll be living in the barracks and giving eye exams in the clinic right across the street! No long commutes for me :) Here are a few pictures of where I'll be living and working.

I was worried that the bedrooms and exam rooms would be really old, but they aren't bad at all! I can't even express how excited I am about this rotation, I can't wait! Catch ya later.

Finally, an eye related blog...ANTERIOR UVEITIS

Here are just some quick notes on Anterior Uveitis (not in full detail), that I wanted to share with my optometry friends:

Presentation: ocular pain, photophobia, and excessive tearing; VA not usually affected
Hallmark signs: "cells and flare"

Uveitis can be either acute or chronic.
Chronic is more often associated with the following systemic problems but not limited to, ankylosing spondylitis, Bechets syndrome, IBS, Reiter's syndrome, juvenille rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoidosis, syphilis, Lyme's disease and/or tuberculosis.

Tx:
-Immobilize ciliary body to decrease pain and lessen the problem-Homatropine 5% QID, Scopolamine 0.25% QID, or Atropine 1% BID.
-Stop the inflammatory response-Pred Forte 1% q15 min for the first 6 hours, then continue q1h for the rest of the day. Have the patient follow-up within 24 hrs (at the longest wait 72 hours).
-Depending on the severity of the uveitis, discontinue the cycloplegic and taper the steroid.

Clinical Pearls:
-Don't taper the steroid until the "cells and flare" are gone.
-Treat this aggressively but follow the condition closely.
